The Indian patent on Viagra was set to expire in May 2013, but Pfizer said it could soon launch its own generic version of Viagra, under the name Levitra.
Pfizer's decision to begin selling the Viagra name, similar to the way it makes its name, comes as Pfizer has faced generic competition from Eli Lilly and ICOS in the market.
Pfizer said it was confident its generic drug could compete with Eli Lilly's Levitra. However, it has also been facing competition in the market for Viagra, which was approved in June but the drug's active ingredient, sildenafil, was not.
"Pfizer has been working with numerous pharmaceutical companies to secure additional patent protection for Viagra to ensure it remains a reliable and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction," its news release said.
